Nanabush Miinwaa Nkag
Nanabush and the Geese

   Ngoding giizhgag Nanabush gii waabmaan nkan, wodi waashko-biiyaag.
One day Nanabush saw some geese in a pond.

There's my dinner and luckily I have basswood rope to catch it with, said Nanabush.

Nanabush entered the water and picked a reed to use as a snorkel.

Underwater, he quickly tied many geese feet together and then tied them to his hand.

Then, he jumped up out of the water, to grab the geese. In a panic, they took to the air, with Nanabush dangling behind.

He screamed, aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! And he begged, Let me down! Let me down!

The geese landed and asked Nanabush what he was up to. Of course Nanabush, always had an answer for everything.

I just wanted to learn to fly, can we go again?, asked Nanabush.

The geese talked it over and decided they would, if Nanabush untied the rope. Nanabush agreed.

   Gii ni gzikewag nkag. Nanabush daa ni noopnanaan pii e ni mbibzowaad, gii ni maamno nendaan ni mbibzod, gaawii dkokiisii geyaabi mtakmig.
The geese took flight. Nanabush ran amongst them as they took off and soon noticed his feet leaving the ground.

Spread your arms and whatever you do, DON'T LOOK DOWN he was told

Nanabush was flying! But he thought he heard voices. They flew very high and still Nanabush heard voices.

The Anishinaabeg are watching me They're cheering me on. I'll look and wave, thought Nanbush.

Nanabush was happy to be the center of attention. He had to look to see who was admiring his amazing flying skills.

   Mii go wi pii dbashiish nabid, mii gii bi ndagoojing, mbiingweyaashi miinwaa baabiibaagndam bi ndagoojing, ndib ntam biinji wiimbnakdoong gii zhi pangshin.
As soon as he did, he fell from the sky, flapping and screaming all the way down landing head first into a hollow tree stump.

He squirmed and wiggled, but could not free himself.

Nanabush cried for help but no help came. Finally he heard a young girl who was looking for a porcupine quills.

   Waab-gaag! Waab-gaag kida Kwezenhs. Waab-gaag! Waab-gaag, zhi-nkwetam Nanabush.
Waab-gaag! Waab-gaag, called the young girl. Waab-gaag! Waab-gaag, answered Nanabush

   Nanabush nkwetam, niibniching bgosendang ninda kwesan ji bi zhaanid wiimbnakdoonh bid. Gii gshkihaan dash go.
Nanabush replied again and again, hoping to lead the girl to the hollow tree and he did.

   Wa kwezenhs, gii waabdaan Nanabush miinjisan zaagsing tikon bgonezid. Gii debwe wendam gii mkowaad waab-gaag.
The young girl saw Nanabush's hair sticking from a knot hole

   Waawaagdosim gii nokaazan daashgowaad mtig, gii bmi zaagehe goojiin Nanabush.
She believed she found her Waab-gaag, so she split the tree with her hatchet and out tumbled Nanabush.

   Waab-gaag? Waab-gaag?, kida Nanabush. Ki giibaaznaagos. Waab-gaag giiyenh naa. Gaa gnabaj gegoo gda naabdisii, kida kwezenhs.
Waab-gaag? Waab-gaag?, asked Nanabush. You're a funny looking Waab-gaag and not very useful, replied the young woman.
